On July 16, an ice cream truck rolled into the East Hill apartment complex in Kent, drawing dozens of children to the parking lot. Among them were three 11-year-old girls who noticed something alarming.

A man was forcibly holding the wrist of their six-year-old neighbor. Despite her visible distress and attempts to break free, the man continued to grip her tightly.

The girls’ instincts kicked in immediately. They started recording with their phones and approached the man, telling him to let go of the child.

The man, later identified as Hayder Albu Mohammed, claimed he knew the child, but the girl shook her head, showing he was lying. When the girls got closer, Mohammed picked up the girl and tried to walk away quickly. The girls kept following him and demanding he let her go. Eventually, he put the girl down and ran away.

The girls took her back to her apartment, where her parents confirmed the man was a stranger.

The Kent Police Department responded quickly. Witnesses gave a good description of the suspect, leading to Mohammed’s arrest. He was charged with attempted kidnapping. Mohammed made his first court appearance on Wednesday, and a judge set his bail at $250,000.

The Kent Police Department praised the girls, stating, “We want to start this post by acknowledging the selfless bravery of three 11-year-old girls. They saw their friend and neighbor being taken by a stranger and stepped in without pause to bring her to safety. We are so proud of you. You are amazing.”

The family of the young girl expressed immense gratitude for the swift actions of the girls.

We are encouraged by this story to look out for one another, to be vigilant in our communities, and to trust that God will give us the strength to act when needed.

Let us pray for the continued safety of our children and for the courage to stand up for what is right, just as these young girls did.
