Woman Pays For Single Dad’s Groceries, She Sees Him In Church Three Months Later

A woman decided to show kindness to a single dad of two when she saw him and his kids at their lowest during an outing to the grocery store.

The incident at the grocery store

The woman said that the cash register showed a bill of $94.10 for the man in front of her at 10:00 pm that night at the grocery store. The man asked the cashier to put things to the side, over and over again, and kept swiping his card, only to be declined.

He was buying the bare minimum and his son and daughter said “Dad” several times. The girl was a pre-teen, and the boy was her son’s age. They were feeling so embarrassed about the whole ordeal. It was a week or two after Thanksgiving, and the lady wondered what the family must have eaten over the holiday. The cashier put cans of tuna, boxes of pasta, bananas, and apples under the counter.

Voice of God

She wondered if he was a single dad as he was not wearing a ring on his finger. She suddenly felt a gentle shove on the back and a mild electric shock to her heart. She was urged to pay for their groceries. She said she heard a voice so clear and loud telling her, “It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the money…I’ll provide. Trust Me.” She said, “I heard God loud and clear.”

She began to open her mouth…but wondered if she would embarrass the family even more. She said she heard the still small voice call again. This time the shove was stronger. “I’ve got it,” She blurted out loudly, as heat flooded her face.

The store was empty, there was no one else in their line, and she watched the man slowly turn, his jaw dropped open. She turned to the cashier. “Please put everything back. I’ll get it all.” “Are you sure?” the cashier said, with shock in her voice. She nodded while looking at the girl and the boy. Their eyes were like saucers. “Yes, absolutely. I can go ahead and swipe my card.”

Act of kindness

She looked at the dad who was crying and his daughter was hugging him. She paid for her things and prayed that God would cover it. The dad was waiting at the end of the lane, he was crying and hugging his precious children. “I don’t know how to thank you,” he whispers.

“It’s okay. I wanted to help. I know it’s what God told me to do. And I have been there.” I replied quietly. “I’m a single dad. It’s so hard,” he said. She gave him a hug and his son and daughter also hugged her. As she walked to her car, she was crying too. She prayed and praised the Lord for allowing her to help. She asked God for more opportunities to be obedient and show the world the utter grace He showed her.

An update

On February 23rd as she and her family were seated at church, and the worship time had just finished and the Pastor was getting ready to preach. I look to my left, and my stomach literally plummets to the ground. Then my heart begins to race.

At the end of the pew, sat the same Dad and his 2 children. They were right there, the only other people in the row. She whispered to her husband, “That’s them,” I say into his ear. “That’s the Dad and his kids from the grocery store that night, remember?”

She began to cry and was covered in goosebumps. She had not told him that she was a Christian and that they went to church. She just obeyed God. It wasn’t about her but it was about God, He was the same One who brought this dad and his family to church that Sunday. Glory to the Lord God Almighty.

Verse of the Day

“[Thanksgiving] I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—”
