A Canadian sister’s five year battle to adopt her baby brother from foster care turned into a beautiful story of faith and love.
God designed families as the foundation of love, faith, and strong relationships. But today we see many families drifting apart due to selfish choices and broken bonds.
Parents and children grow distant, siblings become strangers, and marriages fall apart. Many children suffer without the warmth of family love or understanding.
But Hannah and TJ’s beautiful story reminds us that there are still people who value family bonds and work hard to keep them strong.
In 2017, TJ entered the world too early at 32 weeks in British Columbia. His parents struggled with addiction and domestic violence, leading social services to place him in foster care right after his birth.
Hannah, who shares a father with TJ, saw her brother’s need for a stable home and made a bold decision to pursue adoption, even as a college student.
Hannah turned to her boyfriend Drew Munn with a direct question that would shape their future. “I need you to decide right now, are you on board or not?”
Though Drew felt unsure about becoming parents while still in college, he understood the gravity of TJ’s situation. “We were still in college, still gaining adult experience,” said Drew, who now serves as an engineer officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. “But TJ needed us. Hannah’s conviction convinced me.”
The road to bringing TJ home tested Hannah’s faith and perseverance. Social workers ignored her calls and emails for five years while TJ moved between foster homes.
“I begged for years for someone to listen but I was never taken seriously,” Hannah shared. She refused to give up, trusting that God had a plan for their family.
Everything changed when a new social worker saw Hannah and TJ together in a park. TJ ran straight to Hannah, wrapped his arms around her, and said words that touched her heart: “I missed you so much.”
The social worker recognized their special bond and told Hannah, “You are TJ’s safe place. He doesn’t belong anywhere else other than with you.”
TJ finally came home to Hannah and Drew in October 2022. Their family bond grew stronger, leading to a wedding celebration in October 2023 where TJ stood proud in a tux that matched Drew’s. He even wore his own wedding ring, understanding that “our whole family is getting married.”
Earlier this year, Hannah surprised TJ with news that brought pure joy to his face. She caught his reaction on video as she told him they were heading to Disney World. TJ could hardly believe it until he saw their packed bags in the car.
The heartwarming video touched millions of people on TikTok, showing their special bond.
Now seven years old, TJ loves explaining his unique relationship with Hannah. “She’s my mom and she’s my sister,” he says with pride, feeling doubly blessed by their connection.
The family recently welcomed baby Hazen, answering TJ’s frequent wishes for a little brother.
If you are going through broken family relationships, a troubled marriage, or waiting for God to answer your prayers, take heart from Hannah and TJ’s story.
God turns our broken pieces into beautiful masterpieces when we trust His timing. Romans 8:28 promises us that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”
Keep trusting Him, keep praying, and keep taking steps forward in faith. Just as He brought Hannah and TJ together after five long years, He is working in your life in ways you cannot yet see.
Your season of waiting may become your biggest testimony of His faithfulness.
