A UPS driver’s quick response to God’s prompting helped save the life of a collapsed grandmother in Valdosta, Georgia, leading to a heartwarming friendship.
God works in ways we can’t explain, guiding us to places where we need to be. When we listen to His direction, He uses us to help others in their time of need. This story shows us the power of following those quiet prompts from God.
On August 12, UPS driver Raheem Cooper felt a strong urging to take an unusual route during his deliveries. “It was just God, honestly,” Cooper shared. “He’s got to get all the glory for that… something just told me to go on her street.”
This divine guidance led Cooper to discover 78-year-old Marie Coble lying behind her car.
Cooper found Coble on the ground, bleeding but conscious, though she couldn’t speak. He called 911 right away and protected her from the hot pavement by putting UPS bags under her and keeping her cool with water.
A young woman stopped her car to help, and together they moved Coble to lean against her car while waiting for the ambulance.
The situation was critical – Coble’s warm groceries indicated she had been lying there for some time. The hospital admitted her as Jane Doe because she couldn’t remember who she was.
Her granddaughter, Kayla Cochran, got the frightening news early the next morning.
Coble’s condition took a serious turn when she required emergency brain surgery for a subdural hematoma. “If he didn’t find her, she would have died that day,” Cochran revealed.
The surgery was successful, and Coble began showing signs of recovery. During Cooper’s first hospital visit after her surgery, she showed remarkable progress.
“As soon as I walked in the room, she reached up and gave me a hug, and her granddaughter said she hadn’t talked to anybody right up until I came to the hospital,” Cooper recalled.
Cooper’s compassionate care extended beyond the initial rescue. He visits Coble weekly, bringing her favorite snacks – Twinkies. He’s even started a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical expenses and travel costs for her family.
Cooper’s employer, UPS, recognized his heroic actions with a Challenge Coin and a personal letter from CEO Carol B. Tomé, while his colleagues organized a special luncheon and presented him with a plaque.
The bond between Cooper and Coble has grown into something beautiful. “She’s my adopted grandma now,” Cooper shared. Cochran agrees, saying, “He’s a part of our family now.”
This connection extends to Cooper’s family as well, as he brings his 8-year-old daughter Cali and his mother to visit Coble during her recovery.
This story shows us how God puts the right people in the right place at the right time. When we listen to His guidance, He uses us to help others in amazing ways.
Let’s stay ready to follow God’s direction, even when it means taking an unexpected turn.
Please pray for Marie Coble as she continues to recover at the rehabilitation center in Homerville.
