We all have moments when we feel helpless and there’s nothing more we can do. In those times, it seems everything is out of our hands. Yet, just when we reach our limits, God often provides a ray of hope. That hope can come in many forms, like a kind stranger, a timely phone call, or a trooper arriving just in time to save a life.

On May 12, Baby Brexley was traveling with her parents, Gracie Gray and Kahl Huffman, along U.S. Highway 54 in Kiowa County, Kansas. On their way to church, Brexley suddenly stopped breathing, lost consciousness, and turned a purplish color.

Despite their efforts to revive her, Brexley remained unresponsive, leaving her parents feeling desperate and helpless.

Kahl called 911, and within minutes, Master Trooper Evan Jacks of the Kansas Highway Patrol arrived. Jacks had attended high school with Huffman and responded quickly. “When Evan showed up, he didn’t hesitate one bit. He was right on it,” Huffman said.

Jacks had seen EMTs save his own child during a health scare, which helped him know what to do. He placed Brexley chest down on his arm and patted her back until she started crying.

Brexley was taken to two hospitals before being transferred to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. She was diagnosed with Shone’s complex, a rare heart condition affecting the left side of the heart.

Brexley has had multiple treatments, including a recent open-heart surgery, and is now recovering.

Huffman expressed deep gratitude for Jacks’ help. “He’s a godsend, a hero in our eyes,” Huffman said. Jacks was honored by Brexley’s family and the Triangle Rodeo Club in Greensburg, Kansas, with a plaque. He was also recognized as a hometown hero at a Wichita Wind Surge baseball game.

Jacks credited God for his actions. “The good Lord had me in the right place at the right time. That’s what it boils down to,” he said. “I was placed in the right spot at the right time to get the opportunity to save a life that day.”

As Brexley continues to recover, Huffman encourages other parents to seek help when they feel something is wrong with their child. “If you ever have any doubt or question about your baby, if you’re new parents or anything, don’t hesitate to get help or reach out, even if you feel silly, because you just never know,” he advised.

This story shows the importance of being prepared and having faith in God’s plan. Trooper Jacks’ quick actions saved Brexley’s life. Let this story inspire us to always be ready to help those in need, trusting that God places us in the right place at the right time for a purpose.
