Timeline of Jesus’ crucifixion

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane – ~11:00 PM – 12:30 AM

Scripture: Matthew 26:36–46; Luke 22:39–46
After the Last Supper, Jesus leads His disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane. He prays in anguish, knowing what is about to happen. Meanwhile, His closest followers fall asleep despite His request to stay awake and pray.

Jesus is Betrayed and Arrested – ~12:30 AM – 1:00 AM

Scripture: Matthew 26:47–56; John 18:1–12
Judas arrives with soldiers and betrays Jesus with a kiss. Jesus is arrested and the disciples flee.

Jesus Stands Before Annas and Caiaphas – ~1:00 AM – 3:00 AM

Scripture: John 18:13–24; Matthew 26:57–68
First taken to Annas, the former high priest, Jesus is questioned and then sent to Caiaphas, the current high priest. There He is falsely accused, mocked, and beaten by the council.

Peter Denies Jesus – ~3:00 AM – 5:00 AM

As Jesus is being held, Peter denies knowing Him three times. The rooster crows. Peter remembers Jesus’ words and weeps bitterly.

Jesus is Condemned by the Sanhedrin – ~5:00 AM – 6:00 AM

At daybreak, the Jewish council reconvenes to officially declare Jesus guilty of blasphemy. They bind Him and lead Him to Pilate, the Roman governor.

Jesus Before Pilate – ~6:00 AM – 6:30 AM

Scripture: John 18:28–38; Luke 23:1–5
The Jewish leaders bring Jesus to Pilate’s court. Pilate questions Him but finds no fault. However, the crowd and Jewish leaders are persistent in their accusations.

Jesus Sent to Herod – ~6:30 AM – 7:00 AM

Scripture: Luke 23:6–12
When Pilate learns Jesus is from Galilee, he sends Him to Herod Antipas. Herod mocks Him, dresses Him in a robe, and sends Him back without a verdict.

Jesus is Sentenced – ~7:00 AM – 8:00 AM

Scripture: Matthew 27:15–26; John 19:1–16
Despite acknowledging Jesus’ innocence, Pilate gives in to the crowd’s demands. He releases Barabbas and sentences Jesus to be crucified.

Jesus is Scourged and Mocked – ~8:00 AM – 8:30 AM

Roman soldiers flog Jesus, dress Him in a purple robe, press a crown of thorns onto His head, mock Him as “King of the Jews,” and strike Him repeatedly.

Weakened from the beating, Jesus begins to carry His cross to Golgotha. Simon of Cyrene is compelled to carry it for Him along the way.

Jesus is Crucified – 9:00 AM

Jesus is nailed to the cross between two criminals. The Roman soldiers cast lots for His garments. He prays, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”

Jesus Speaks to the Thief and His Mother – ~9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Scripture: Luke 23:39–43
One thief mocks Him, but the other repents. Jesus replies, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” He also looks to Mary and John and says, “Woman, behold your son,” and “Behold your mother.”

At the sixth hour (noon), darkness falls over the whole land and lasts for three hours.

The Temple Veil is Torn – Shortly After 3:00 PM

The veil in the temple tears from top to bottom. An earthquake shakes the ground. A centurion exclaims, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Jesus is Laid in the Tomb – ~4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Before the Sabbath begins at sunset, Joseph of Arimathea asks Pilate for Jesus’ body. He and Nicodemus wrap Him in linen with spices and lay Him in a new tomb.
