‘Softly and Tenderly’ is a timeless Christian hymn composed and written by Will L. Thompson in 1880. The hymn has been a source of comfort and inspiration for many over the years, thanks to its tender message and powerful imagery.

Legend has it that when evangelist Dwight L. Moody was in the hospital and barred from seeing visitors, Thompson came to visit. Despite the restrictions, Moody insisted on seeing him and shared his admiration for the hymn:

“Will, I would rather have written ‘Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling’ than anything I have been able to do in my whole life.”

The hymn’s lyrics are a gentle call to those in need of solace:

Softly and tenderly
Jesus is calling
Calling for you and for me
See, on your portals He’s waiting and watching
Watching for you and for me

Thompson was a member of the Churches of Christ, and several of his hymns and gospel songs continue to be in use today. ‘Softly and Tenderly’ is the most widely known of his compositions and has transcended its origins in the American Restoration Movement.

Come home, come home
Ye who are weary come home
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling
Calling O sinner come home

Recently, Hugh P & Maria recorded a beautiful cover of ‘Softly and Tenderly,’ reminding us that Jesus is calling and waiting for every sinner to come home. Their rendition is a testament to the enduring power of this classic hymn.

Verse of the Day

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Luke 2:8-11
