On September 11, 2024, Sky Elements transformed the America’s Got Talent stage into a canvas of light and emotion. The Dallas-based drone show group dedicated their performance to co-founder Preston Ward’s daughter Briley Rose, who died in 2020. As darkness fell over the AGT Pasadena Civic Auditorium, more than 1,200 synchronized drones lit up the sky like stars.

The haunting melody of Lily Meola’s ‘Butterfly’ filled the air as the drones began to tell a story. They formed a hill with a lone tree, under which a parent and child walked hand in hand.

This touching scene shifted as the child’s figure drifted away, leaving the parent alone. This powerful scene moved many in the audience to tears.

The drones then created a single rose, symbolizing Briley Rose, before spreading across the sky as colorful butterflies.

The show ended with a magnificent phoenix rising on fiery wings, representing rebirth and renewal.

Before the performance, Preston Ward shared the personal story behind their creation. He described grief as a fire that can destroy or fuel a new passion. After his daughter died, seeing a drone show brought him joy again. This inspired him to create similar experiences for others.

“This performance is definitely a love letter to my daughter,” Ward said, his voice breaking. “And what better place to tell the story of Briley, my rose, than Pasadena, the city of roses.”

The judges were visibly moved. Sofia Vergara, wiping away tears, said, “Who knew that drones could make you so emotional? That was a surprise, it was so beautiful. That was heartfelt, I don’t even know what to say. Congratulations, what a beautiful, beautiful job.”

Howie Mandel noted the timing of the performance on the anniversary of 9/11. “What an emotional, beautiful moment,” he remarked. “I can’t thank you enough for this. There isn’t an Act that just moves your heart this much, and you just broke us.”

Simon Cowell, known for his sharp critiques, was at a loss for words. Struggling to compose himself, he managed only, “That was… ah, that was… oh gosh,” before deferring to his fellow judges.

Heidi Klum, also in tears, said to Ward, “What a beautiful tribute to your daughter. It was absolutely amazing; we all have the most emotions and feelings for you. I just want to give you a big hug right now. Thank you for sharing that with us.”

The choice of ‘Butterfly’ by Lily Meola added depth to the performance. The lyrics, “I know your wings are getting heavy / You can let go when you’re ready / to fly, fly,” echoed the themes of loss and new beginnings.

Let’s keep Preston Ward and all who have experienced loss in our prayers. May they find comfort in God’s love and know their loved ones are remembered. We pray for God’s grace to touch those who grieve, bringing them peace and renewal.

Verse of the Day

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.””
