A deaf couple who selflessly serves others in their community, despite their own financial hardships, receives an unexpected blessing from a Secret Santa in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Yet, when life gets hard, it’s easy to focus on our own problems and forget to look around us.
However, there are those who live out this teaching in remarkable ways—like Kent and Marlene, who show us what it truly means to put others first, even in the midst of life’s challenges.
This holiday season, a kindhearted Secret Santa in eastern Idaho set aside $1 million to help deserving people in the community. The Secret Santa partnered with East Idaho News to find people who needed help.
Kent and Marlene stood out because of their dedication to serving others. At their old jobs, they created friendships by teaching their coworkers sign language. Their fellow workers wanted to learn and made real efforts to sign with Kent and Marlene, which meant so much to them.
Even after losing their jobs and having trouble paying their bills, Kent and Marlene didn’t stop helping others. Every Monday, they go to a 97-year-old deaf woman’s house to clean it. They make sure she has a clean, safe place to live.
What makes their story special is how they serve with joy – they never complain about their own problems or look for praise.
The East Idaho News team put on Christmas outfits and went to surprise Kent and Marlene at home. With help from a sign language translator, they shared the Secret Santa’s gifts: $1,000 in gas cards so they can keep driving to clean the elderly woman’s house, $2,000 in grocery gift cards to buy food, and a $2,000 check to help with their bills.
The reporter signed through the translator, explaining how these gifts would help Kent and Marlene continue their ministry of helping the elderly woman.
The Lord often provides for His people in surprising ways, especially when they put others first. Their story makes me think about how I can serve others, even when things get tough in my own life.
