Beloved School Custodian Receives Warm Surprise And Gives God The Glory

Ray Bethea, also known as “Captain” Ray, is a valued custodian at Community High School in Swannanoa, North Carolina. His story caught the attention of “Good Morning America” (GMA), leading to a touching surprise. For over ten years, Ray has significantly impacted the school community with his kindness.

The surprise unfolded as GMA host Ike Ejiochi pulled Ray from a meeting. Ike praised Ray for making the school feel like more than a building. In the gym, students, colleagues, and Ray’s wife gathered to show their love and appreciation.

Ray earned the nickname “Captain Ray” for wearing a captain’s hat daily. He is celebrated for his kindness and support. A student, Lyric, shared, “If you’re feeling down and need somebody to talk to, Mr. Ray is definitely the person to go to.” Ray offers comfort to students and staff alike.

The school principal praised Ray. Ike asked Ray about the source of his energy. Ray responded, “Well I just have to give God the glory because again that’s where it started for me.” This heartfelt moment was met with cheers.

As a gesture of appreciation, GMA gifted Ray and his wife a trip to Las Vegas to see Lionel Richie, with a stay at Caesar’s Palace. This act acknowledges Ray’s dedication.

Ray Bethea’s story highlights the impact of kindness and compassion within a community. His faith and approach to life have made a significant mark on Community High School. Ray’s example is an inspiring reminder of the positive change one person can bring by leading with love.
