Baltimore Ravens tight end Mark Andrews was hailed a hero off the field as well after he helped a passenger in a medical crisis on a Southwest flight from Baltimore to Phoenix.
The event was described as “genuinely scary” by fellow passenger Andrew Springs.
A woman on my @southwest flight from Baltimore to Phoenix this morning had a mid-flight medical emergency. The doctor and nurse attending to her couldn’t find a strong pulse, her blood pressure was extremely low, and required oxygen to breathe. It was genuinely scary. (1/3)

When a female passenger’s vital signs dropped suddenly, medical professionals on the flight were puzzled. Andrews stepped forward with a potentially lifesaving suggestion. He thought the issue might be low blood sugar. Although it wasn’t confirmed, Andrews offered his glucose testing kit and helped a doctor and nurse use it.
A man in the aisle seat popped up, “Could it be her blood sugar? I have a diabetic testing kit.”
It was @Ravens TE Mark Andrews.
Andrews instructed the medical professionals (equal citizen heroes in this story) on using his test kit. Eventually her heart-rate stabilized. (2/3)

Andrew Springs praised Andrews on his X account. He wrote, “As he has done his whole career, [Andrews] stepped up in a huge moment when people needed him most.” Springs highlighted the remarkable sight of strangers working together to help someone in distress.
Paramedics met the flight as soon as we landed. Andrews deplaned quietly. No fanfare. As he has done his whole career, he stepped up in a huge moment when people needed him most.
Watching complete strangers spring into action to help save someone’s life is truly amazing. (3/3)

Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowler, modestly credited the medical staff and flight attendants as the “real heroes.” His actions reflect his personal battle with Type 1 diabetes, diagnosed at age 9. Despite his condition, Andrews has excelled in football, undeterred by the challenges.
His statement through the Ravens’ X account thanked the nurse and doctor on the plane.

When we encounter others in distress, it’s our call to act with compassion, just as God teaches us. By doing so, we shine His light and share His love with the world.
1 John 3:17-18 – “But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
