Now for many people, Christmas means hosting parties, decorating homes with lights, and planning festive dinners, but we often miss the true meaning behind this blessed season.
There are millions who join the celebration each year without knowing that Christmas tells the beautiful story of God’s perfect love for the humanity.
Pastor Glen Scrivener identifies four distinct types of people we encounter during Christmas, each approaching the season with their own perspective.
The first type is the Scrooge – someone who deliberately distances themselves from any holiday joy. They see only darkness and foolishness in the season’s festivities, choosing to stay away while others prepare for celebration. Their heart remains closed to the warmth and meaning that Christmas brings.
Then there’s the Shopper, whose entire focus revolves around gifts and material things. These people often push themselves into debt, believing that perfect presents will bring happiness. They spend hours in stores and online, searching for deals and must-have items, missing the truth that the greatest gift ever given didn’t come with a price tag.
The third type is the Santa – those caught up in the surface-level celebration of Christmas. They rush from party to party, wear festive sweaters, and fill their calendars with events. This focus on Santa distracts from the true meaning of Christmas and sends a confusing message, especially to children.
Instead of learning about Jesus Christ who came to save humanity, people get caught up in tales about Santa bringing gifts. This man-made tradition has pulled many away from understanding that God sent His Son as the real gift to the world. Those who celebrate the Santa version of Christmas place their hope for happiness in temporary things, missing the eternal joy that comes from knowing why Jesus came to earth.
However, the fourth type – the Savior Christmas – represents those who grasp the real reason for celebration. These people understand that Christmas began when God demonstrated His incredible love by sending Jesus Christ to redeem us from our sins and give us eternal life – the greatest gift humanity could receive. This truth stands far above all the commercial activities that usually dominate the season.
Pastor Scrivener’s message helps us examine our own approach to Christmas. We might find ourselves behaving like one or more of these types as years pass. His teaching gently reminds us that we can always choose to focus on Jesus instead of getting caught up in the earthly things.
