A firefighter once saved a woman’s life, and years later, she became the nurse caring for him during his cancer treatment. This amazing story shows how God can bring people together in unexpected ways.
Chuck Montgomery used to be a fire chief in Glendale. He recently found out he has cancer, which sadly happens to many firefighters because of the dangerous things they breathe in while doing their job.
Chuck started getting treatment at City of Hope in Glendale. Little did he know, he was about to meet someone from his past.
Back in 1996, Chuck was a fire captain. One day, he got a call about a bad car crash. When he got there, he found Christy Lessnau badly hurt. A drunk driver had run a red light and hit Christy’s car.
Christy remembers how scary it was: “I looked over and saw my mom was knocked out.” Christy had a big cut on her neck and chin. Chuck and his team worked fast to save Christy’s life.
Christy never forgot the brave firefighters who helped her that day. She said, “They saved both our lives and made me feel safe.” Now, almost 30 years later, Christy works as a nurse at City of Hope.
Here’s where the story gets really special. Christy was taking care of a patient getting cancer treatment. She heard him talking about being a firefighter. She got curious and started asking questions.
“What fire department did you work for?” she asked. When he said Glendale, she got excited. She asked if he knew some of the firefighters who had saved her. Then she asked, “Do you know Chuck?” The man took off his hat and said, “I’m Chuck.”
Can you imagine how they both felt? Christy was amazed. She said, “It’s not how I’d want to see someone who saved my life. But it was great to thank him again.” Chuck was happy to see Christy doing so well in her job as a nurse.
Chuck is fighting hard against his cancer. He says it’s like fighting a fire: “You don’t give up. You make a plan and attack it.” He sees his cancer as a fire inside him that needs to be put out “one bag at a time.”
Chuck saved Christy’s life long ago. Now, Christy is helping to save his life. It’s like God planned it all along.
In Galatians 6:2, it says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Chuck and Christy are doing just that. They’re helping each other, just like Jesus taught us to do.
Let’s remember to pray for Chuck as he fights cancer. We should also pray for all firefighters, nurses, and others who risk their lives to help people. They show God’s love by what they do.
