The original lyrics of this song were composed by Sarah Adams and William Fox in 1841, and the tune was composed by Lowell Mason in 1856.

‘Nearer, My God, to Thee’ is scripture-based and retells the story of Jacob’s dream that is found in Genesis 28:11–12 which says, “So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…”

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross that raiseth me,
Still all my song shall be, nearer, my God, to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

It is a well-known hymn and is sung by congregations around the world, it was allegedly the last song that the band on RMS Titanic played before it sank into the waters. It was also the last song that the crew and passengers of the SS Valencia sang before it sank near the Canadian coast in 1906.

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down,
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone.
Yet in my dreams I’d be nearer, my God to Thee.
Nearer, my God, to Thee, Nearer to Thee!

Let us always remember to call upon the name of the Lord even when we are in the midst of darkness, trouble and challenging times, because He is faithful to His children and will answer our prayers. Amen!

Verse of the Day

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Luke 2:8-11
