Bill Buda, a dedicated mailman in Ohio, received a heartfelt send-off from his community as he completed his final mail route before retiring after 31 years of service.
Retirement marks a big change in life. It’s a time to look back on years of work and the friendships made along the way. For Bill Buda, his last day as a mailman turned into a celebration of how much he meant to the people he served.
After 31 years as a mail carrier, Bill Buda finished his career on September 21, 2024. His daughter Alexa captured the touching scenes in a video that quickly spread online, getting over 500,000 views.
The footage showed a neighborhood coming together to thank their favorite mailman. Houses on Bill’s 12.2-mile route were decorated with balloons, and people stood outside to greet him. Kids gave him drawings and notes, showing how much he meant to them.
Alexa wrote on Instagram, “People will NEVER forget how you made them feel.” This summed up Bill’s impact on the community. He did more than just deliver mail – he became a key part of neighborhood life.
At 59, Bill shared how he found his calling. He planned to play pro basketball after college, but a heart problem changed that. After some job losses in the early ’90s, his dad suggested he try the post office. What started as a Saturday job became his life’s work.
Bill took pride in his dedication, mentioning his perfect attendance streak of 11 years. This consistency let him see families grow and change over time.
He explained, “You’re walking the same route every day, 12.2 miles. And all of a sudden, a sign shows up in the yard: ‘Congratulations, we had a boy.’ And then next thing you know, ‘Congratulations, I just graduated from high school.’ Then it’s ‘Congratulations, I just graduated from college.'”
His job was about more than mail. Bill kept an eye out for the community. He checked on older residents and noticed if things seemed off, like an open garage door when kids got home from school. If mail piled up, he’d make sure someone checked on the resident.
When Bill decided to retire, he made “save the date” cards for his customers. He picked a Saturday as his last day so he could see more people. The response amazed him. “When you see all that on Saturday, with everybody almost going overboard, you’re like, ‘Man, I guess for 24 and a half years on this route, I really must have done something right to have this,'” Bill shared.
The celebration honored all the small ways Bill had connected with people over the years. From drawing with kids using sidewalk chalk to checking on older residents, he showed what being a good neighbor means. These little acts added up, making Bill an important part of the community.
As he finished his last route with his family, the moment hit home. “We kind of all just stared at each other and just literally said this is it. This was the best send-off there could be. What a way to walk off,” Bill said, capturing the mix of feelings that come with such a big life change.
For his retirement, Bill plans to enjoy life. “It’s my turn now,” he said happily. “I’m all set to hit as many stadiums as I can.” He’s excited to watch sports and spend time with his family, including his two daughters, their partners, his mother, and his wife.
