82-Year-Old McDonald’s Worker Can’t Afford to Retire, So Strangers Raise $20,000 to Help Him

Edward Eubanks, an 82-year-old, has been working at a McDonald’s in Henderson, Nevada, for 15 years. He had no plans to stop working, as he had no savings for his retirement.

When kind strangers learned of his situation, they stepped in and raised over $24,000 to help him.

Many older people find themselves in similar situations, working past retirement age because they didn’t have the chance to save enough during their working years. It’s a difficult reality, but this heartwarming story reminds us that we can make a difference in their lives with a kind gesture.

Mr. Ed, as everyone calls him, has been working at McDonald’s since 2009. He’s known for wearing a fun hamburger hat and always having a cheerful word for customers. “I tell them I am Mr. Ed, aka the hamburger man,” he shared with a local news station, showing his playful spirit.

Mr. Ed’s life has been full of hard work and service. He started working in his twenties, helping his dad. Then he bravely served our country in the Vietnam War. After that, he spent 26 years at the Nevada National Security Site as a radiation monitor. “That was interesting,” he said about that long stretch of his career.

Even after all those years of work, Mr. Ed found he needed to keep working. He helped a local handyman for a while before starting at McDonald’s.

At McDonald’s, Mr. Ed keeps busy. He makes sure the dining room is clean, fills up the drink station, and keeps everything tidy. His bosses appreciate his hard work. They told the news how grateful they are to have Mr. Ed on their team.

One day, a regular customer named Abraham Cruz noticed Mr. Ed’s dedication. Abraham learned that Mr. Ed, despite working his whole life, hadn’t been able to save for retirement. This is a problem many older folks face. In fact, one in four seniors have no retirement savings at all. Abraham decided to do something to help.

Abraham set up an online fundraiser on GoFundMe for Mr. Ed. He told people, “He’s always joking around. He’s a good guy, and we need to take care of the good guys here. We really need to spread some love.” Abraham’s words touched many hearts.

People responded with amazing generosity. The fundraiser quickly grew beyond what anyone expected. It started with a goal of $10,500 but soon reached over $24,000. People from the local area and even strangers from far away gave money to help Mr. Ed.

When Mr. Ed heard about all the donations, he was deeply moved. “This is surprising,” he said with emotion in his voice. “I am extremely grateful, and I could use the money.” The timing was perfect, as Mr. Ed had recently hurt his back and needed medical care.

Despite his challenges, Mr. Ed stays positive. He likes to say, “If you laugh a lot and keep moving, you’ve got it made.” His cheerful outlook has clearly touched many people’s hearts.

Mr. Ed’s story reminds us of bigger issues facing many older Americans. Many worry they won’t have enough money for retirement. Even people who try to save often fear it won’t be enough. These concerns affect many of our neighbors and maybe even our own families.

As we think about Mr. Ed and others like him, let’s pray. We can ask God to provide for seniors who are struggling financially. We can pray for communities to come together and support their elderly neighbors. And we can ask for wisdom about how we might help those in need around us.
