God often uses unexpected moments to guide us. Even when things seem tough, He may have a plan to lead us to something better.

In August 2022, Abbie Rutledge, 20 years old, was driving on a Birmingham highway when she saw police lights flashing behind her. As Trooper J.T. Brown walked up to her car, Rutledge felt worried. She told him she couldn’t pay for a ticket because she was broke and stuck in a job that wasn’t going anywhere. Instead of writing her up, Trooper Brown did something special.

He said, “Well, how about we talk about it then.” They spent about 10 to 15 minutes chatting about different jobs Rutledge could do. Together, they thought nursing might be a good fit for her.

Brown gave Rutledge a warning instead of a ticket. On the warning, he wrote, “Promise me you’ll go to scrub or nursing school, and slow down, and I won’t give you a ticket.”

This small act of kindness made a big impact on Rutledge.

Rutledge took his words to heart. She said, “As soon as he left, and as soon as I got to where I was going, I started pushing myself toward that career.” Brown’s suggestion had given her hope and a new goal to work towards.

For the next two years, Rutledge focused on her new path. She signed up for a surgical technology program at Bevill State Community College in Jasper, Alabama. It wasn’t easy, but she kept going, thinking back to that talk on the roadside.

In August 2024, Rutledge finished her two-year program. To her joy, Trooper Brown came to her graduation. “I wanted him to see the impression he made on me,” Rutledge said.

Now 22, Rutledge works as a surgical technician at the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. She loves her new job and is grateful to Brown for helping her find this path.

Rutledge learned an important lesson from this experience. She said, “Five minutes talking to anybody, even if you don’t know them, can make the largest impact of their life. You never know when it could happen.”

Trooper Brown was surprised by how much his words helped Rutledge. He said, “She made my entire career worth it.” He feels good knowing he made such a big difference in her life.

This story shows how being kind and helping others can change lives. When Trooper Brown took time to listen and give advice, he did more than just his job. He showed how police officers can really help their communities.

We can learn from both Rutledge and Brown. Like Trooper Brown, we should try to be kind and help others when we can. And like Rutledge, we should be open to new chances to make our lives better.

Let’s pray for Abbie Rutledge and Trooper J.T. Brown. May they keep inspiring others in their jobs in healthcare and law enforcement.
