Leap years are a calendar correction, adding an extra day in February to align our calendar with Earth’s orbit. This adjustment is crucial for farmers. It allows them to keep their planting and harvesting schedules aligned with the seasons.

For those born on February 29, like Mary, it presents a unique dilemma: when to celebrate. Initially, Mary celebrated on her sisters’ birthdays. Later, she chose her husband’s birthday, making each celebration unique and heartfelt.

The centennial celebration was a heartwarming affair, held at the Sand Springs Methodist Church. Mary described the event as “fabulous,” with loved ones gathering from across the country. “Everyone was so happy to be there, and I was happy to be there,” she recounted.

Faith has been a guiding light in Mary’s life. She fondly recalls her draw to the front row in church, captivated by the music and the message of Jesus’s love and guidance.

“I loved the music and when they talked about how Jesus loves you, and He would be helpful to you all your life if you’d give your heart to Him, I said, ‘That’s for me.’ I walked up and knelt at the altar and prayed, and then I went back to my seat. And I’ve never regretted it.” This decision to follow Jesus has been a constant source of strength and comfort.

Her love story with William Wayne Forsythe began with a chance encounter and a burst of laughter on their high school grounds. One day, Mary heard a laugh that captured her attention. Upon seeing William, she was instantly taken by his charm. However, she lost sight of him and thought she might never see him again.

Their paths crossed once more in their school’s mixed chorus, where William’s laughter and his remarkable bass voice won her over. This shared interest in music and their subsequent time spent together in choir laid the foundation for their enduring love.

Together, they built a legacy that includes two children, five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, enduring 69 years until William’s passing in 2011.

Inspired by her faith, Mary authored “You Are Fantastic,” a book aimed at encouraging others to recognize their worth through God’s eyes. The book resonated with many and has already sold out twice.

Mary’s work extends beyond her family and writing. She has devoted much time to volunteering and serving her community.

Mary attributes her longevity to good genetics and a lifestyle free from smoking and drinking.

Mary’s advice to the younger generation is inspiring. “Read Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to learn exactly what Jesus wants you to be like and how he will help you do that.”

Mary’s life shows us the joy we get when living in a way that pleases God. By following His will, He blesses our marriages, our families, and grants us a fulfilling life.
