An Israeli hostage who was held captive by Hamas for 498 days experienced an emotional reunion with his wife and learned the name of his daughter who was born during his captivity.
Sagui Dekel Chen, 36, was among three hostages released by Hamas on Saturday. He was abducted from Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7, 2023, after he placed his pregnant wife Avita and two daughters in their safe room.
During the 498 days of his captivity, his wife gave birth to their third daughter.
The emotional reunion took place at the Re’im military base in southern Israel. In a touching moment, Sagui asked Avita what she had named their baby daughter. She revealed the Hebrew name as Shachar Mazal.
“Perfect,” Sagui responded, followed by a kiss. “You are a champion,” Avita said through tears.
Fellow hostages Sasha Troufanov and Iair Horn were also freed in exchange for 369 Palestinian prisoners. This marks the sixth hostage-prisoner swap since the ceasefire agreement took effect on January 19.
So far, 16 Israeli and five Thai hostages have been released in exchange for 566 Palestinian prisoners.
The International Committee of the Red Cross expressed deep concern about the remaining captives in Gaza.
Let us lift up our prayers for all those affected by this conflict. We pray for God’s protection over the remaining hostages, comfort for their families, and His peace to prevail in the Holy Land.
May He guide all parties involved toward reconciliation and lasting peace.
