Biblical Teaching On Fighting Lust And Overcoming It

Culture tells us that if we look but not touch then it’s okay, but let us look at Biblical teaching on fighting lust and overcoming it. The Bible tells us that even if we look twice at a woman with lust we have committed adultery.

Scripture also goes one step forward and tells us if our eye causes us to sin then to gouge it out. So what should we do?

What is lust?

Lust is uncontrolled sexual desire or appetite just like greed and gluttony which is forbidden in the Bible. Lust can make us see people as objects for our own gratification and pleasure. We can easily forget God and try and play God in controlling people around us.

Satan knows that all men can be tempted in this area and so we have to fight a spiritual battle not against flesh and blood because lusting is not at all okay in the sight of God.

Dishonoring God and our spouse

When we commit sexual sin or adultery we put our wives and God in a position of dishonor which can cause our relationships to decay.
Our marriages are pictures of God’s relationship with people as Jesus and the church are the bridegroom and the bride.

When we love our wives as Christ loved the church, we are exhibiting God’s love to everyone around us and our marriages become living, breathing embodiment of the gospel.

But when we spoil that relationship with lust and sexual sin we’re robbing others of a chance to see God. You must be sure you know God and not know about Him. The Pharisees in the Bible knew a ton about God but only knowledge about who He is isn’t enough.

How to eliminate the sin of lust?

1. Stay away from it

The Bible tells us to, “Flee from youthful passions and pursue righteousness” in 2 Timothy 2:22. In Romans 13:14, we see, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no plans to satisfy the fleshly desires.”

2. Run away far from it

Run far away from lust just like how we read about Joseph running away from Potiphar’s wife in the Bible. God later rewarded him with the title and position of Prime Minister in the land of Egypt.

3. Run towards God

Surround yourself with the word of God and godly people. Dig deep into His word and put on gospel music and let the word of God flood your mind and home. The more you know God, the more you will desire to run away from sin. But the less you know God the more you will be attracted to sin.

We are told to clean and sweep the homes of our heart and spirit as we put off the sin of lust let’s learn to guard our hearts.

Bible verses to stay away from lust

You have heard that it was said, “Do not commit adultery.” But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. —Matthew 5:27-28

Dear God, would you please free me from the chains of lust. Teach me to guard my heart. Guide me in the way everlasting. Amen.

I will not set anything worthless before my eyes. I hate the practice of transgression; it will not cling to me. A devious heart will be far from me; be involved with evil. —Psalm 101:3-4

How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping Your word. —Psalm 119:9

Verse of the Day

“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.”

Luke 2:6-7
