Enrique Balcazar returned to his Altadena neighborhood to find his house stood alone after the devastating Eaton Fire swept through California.
Even in the most devastating situations, we can see God’s hand moving in ways we cannot explain. He constantly reminds us that He is with us through all circumstances, and He will help us get through any storm.
Balcazar shared his emotional return home in a Facebook video on January 9, the day after the fire ravaged his neighborhood. As he walked down his street, the scene before him was hard to process.
“From what I can see, every house is burned down on my block except for my house,” he said, his voice shaking with emotion as he recorded the devastation around him.
What made his story more remarkable was how his property escaped the flames. The fire burned everything around his house but stopped at his property line. Even the wooden frame of his ongoing home extension remained standing while burned construction materials lay scattered in his backyard.
The only mark the fire left was a small burn on his garage corner, which still had smoke rising from it. “We’re going to put some water on that right now so it doesn’t reignite,” Balcazar said as he inspected the damage.
Through tears, he said, “Why do I deserve this? I don’t know. I don’t think I deserve it, but God bless everybody else.”
Looking at his untouched house surrounded by complete destruction, he could only point to divine intervention, asking, “How does that happen, if not God?”
The Eaton Fire became the fifth deadliest and second most destructive wildfire in California’s history. The flames claimed 17 lives and destroyed more than 9,000 buildings, leaving many families without homes and changing communities forever.
In the video, Balcazar mentioned he wasn’t sure if his insurance would cover any damage. Yet his main concern seemed to focus on his neighbors who had lost everything.
This story shows us how God can protect us in ways we cannot explain, but it also reminds us to help others when we receive such blessings.
Every time God shows His mercy to us, we should extend that same care to people around us who are suffering. Let’s remember to pray for everyone affected by the Eaton Fire. We should ask God to give them strength and hope as they start rebuilding their lives.
Please join in prayer for the families who lost their loved ones in this terrible fire, that God will comfort them and give them peace during this difficult time.
