His Eye Is On The Sparrow Maggie Beth Phelps

Maggie is the daughter of David Phelps and has clearly inherited his talent for singing and music.

This video is from the live concert filming of David Phelps’ Hymnal: A Journey of Faith Through Hymns.

“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26) and “Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

This Bible verse inspired the lyrics of the classic Christian hymn ‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow.’

Why should I feel discouraged,
Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely,
And long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion,
My constant Friend is He;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow’ was written in 1905 by lyricist Civilla D. Martin and composer Charles H. Gabriel. It became especially popular after actress-singer Ethel Waters used the title for her autobiography. Mahalia Jackson’s recording of the song was honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2010.

Chorus:
I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

The video of Maggie Beth Phelps singing ‘His Eye Is On The Sparrow’ was filmed at the Barn at the Phelps Farm.

Today, more than ever, this hymn resonates with us as it calls us to be happy and content in all situations, knowing that God is looking over us.

Verse of the Day

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Luke 2:8-11
