A Match Made In Heaven: High School Sweethearts Reunite And Get Married After 70 Years Apart

Their fairy tale love story has finally come true and alive after they both spent 70 years apart.

Fred Paul, 84, and Florence Harvey, 81, have waited nearly 70 years before they got in touch again and married each other.

The two met in high school in the small town of Wandsworth in Canada’s Newfoundland and Labrador province. They were love birds for two years and were inseparable. “She was my first love. My first girlfriend and my first true love,” Paul, now 84, said.

During these two years, Fred flickered his porch light on and off each night to tell Florence good night.

But with many true romances, it sadly ended when Fred, 18, moved to find work and a year later, when he returned, he found that his 15-year-old love had moved away.

Fred and Florence started their own families, Fred was married with two children, and Florence also married with five children.

In 2017, Florence’s husband passed away, and in 2019 Fred’s wife passed away, and when Florence heard of Fred’s wife’s passing, she called him to encourage him.

But that one call turned into weekly phone calls, and then to daily chats on the phone and then Florence surprised Fred with a visit, and three days later they took the plunge and decided to get married.

Fred and Florence were married on August 8, 2020, at a small ceremony at Norval United Church in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada.

“You were the first young man to walk me home in my teens,” Harvey told Paul during the ceremony. “I guess you’ll be the last man to walk me home.”

After they exchanged vows, Fred brought out his accordion and sang “I Wouldn’t Change You if I Could,” by Ricky Skaggs.

“There were tears in the eyes of all gathered. You couldn’t help but feel you were watching a real, live miracle, that you were witness to an unimaginable love story,” the church’s lead pastor and wedding officiator Paul Ivany said.

What a selfless story of patient love in today’s world of instant coffee. We all could learn so much from their life.

Verse of the Day

“[Thanksgiving] I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—”
