Our nation is built on a foundation of faith and values. It’s refreshing to see when these spiritual roots become a central part of our patriotic expressions.

The ‘Star Spangled Banner’, penned by Francis Scott Key in 1814, has long symbolized American values. While it typically evokes pride, this particular performance seemed to resonate even more deeply with listeners.

As the Democratic National Convention kicked off in Chicago on Monday, excitement filled the United Center. The Soul Children of Chicago, a Grammy-nominated youth gospel choir, took center stage to open the event.

Walt Whitman, their director, stood alongside the singers, who ranged from 7 to 17 years old. Dressed in matching red sweaters, they prepared to offer their unique take on the national anthem.

From the first note, it was clear this performance was extraordinary. The young singers’ voices blended in beautiful harmony. Emotion poured through every lyric. Their gospel-inspired arrangement alternated between soft, reflective moments and powerful, soaring crescendos. Many in the audience were visibly moved.

As the choir continued, attendees in the United Center began to clap along. When they approached the anthem’s final lines, the arena fell silent. As the last notes faded, the crowd leapt to their feet, erupting in applause and cheers.

For Walt Whitman, the choir’s director, this moment marked a significant achievement. He and the Soul Children of Chicago have dedicated years to being positive role models in their community. They’ve performed at other high-profile events, including former President Barack Obama’s inauguration.

In fact, a producer from that ceremony invited the choir to sing at this convention.

The impact of the choir’s rendition extended far beyond the arena. As videos spread online, thousands more watched and were touched. People worldwide left comments expressing their admiration.

One YouTube viewer wrote, “I haven’t ever actually felt the anthem until now. That was beautiful.”

Another commented, “I’m not American, but this rendition brought tears to my eyes.”

A third shared, “The patriotism, the beautiful voices of the children, and the renewal of our National Anthem brought me to tears!”

As the convention progressed with speeches and policy discussions, many couldn’t shake the memory of the choir’s moving performance.

As we believe, no matter who the president is, Jesus is our King. We should always uphold this truth in all matters of our country.
