Basketball Star Reads Bible Before Game and Inspires Teammates

Gabe McGlothan, a standout forward for Grand Canyon University, is known for both his basketball skills and his faith. Before games, he reads the Bible on the bench. He describes this ritual as, “Gotta bring your sword to battle.”

Jason Romano of Sports Spectrum noticed McGlothan’s pregame routine. He asked McGlothan if he was just holding the Bible or actually reading it. McGlothan’s answer was straightforward. “Reading it,” he said. He explained that he does daily devotions, including special ones before games.

McGlothan started this ritual with Jayden Stone, a former teammate. “We’d read a verse together, and then let’s take it out to the game. So we have that constant reminder — adversity strikes, we know exactly where to go,” McGlothan said. This tradition has made a positive impact on his teammates and fans. “It’s actually been super cool to see how it’s impacting the others around me,” he shared.

The GCU Antelopes have had a great 2023-24 season, with McGlothan playing a key role.

GCU’s coach, Bryce Drew, has high praise for McGlothan. He commented on McGlothan’s NBA potential: “He’s playing at such a high level. He’s shooting the ball from the perimeter. He’s rebounding. He’s the prototype size that you want in the NBA right now.” Drew also noted McGlothan’s spiritual growth at GCU.

“I think his faith has really grown at GCU,”

In a 2023 podcast interview on TikTok, McGlothan discussed the responsibility that comes with being a Christian. “Whenever we take that name and hold onto it ourselves, … our actions are shown as, like, ‘Oh, this is what a believer [in] Christ does,” he said.

McGlothan also openly shares his faith journey on social media. He posted about his baptism in 2020, calling it his “best accomplishment.”

Like Gabe McGlothan, we are called to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ. His story shows us the impact of sharing our faith openly.

Remember what Jesus said in Matthew 5:16: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This verse urges us to be living examples of God’s love.

Our faith in action, just like McGlothan’s, can lead others to Christ. Let’s take this message to heart. Wherever we are, let’s boldly live out our faith. This way, we can make a real difference in the world around us.

Verse of the Day

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.””
