Emmy Russell, Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, impressed everyone on American Idol with her powerful original song ‘Skinny’ during her audition.
Growing up with a legendary figure like Loretta Lynn as her grandmother, Emmy faced heavy expectations. This often leads to self-doubt and constant questioning of one’s abilities.
Before her audition, Emmy’s mother, Patsy, explained her daughter’s nerves. She mentioned the challenge of emerging from the shadow of a musical family. Patsy advised, “How do I fill those shoes? Well, the deal is, you don’t. You make your own shadow.”
Emmy performed ‘Skinny’ at the piano. This song is about her battle with an eating disorder. Her performance touched the judges. Katy Perry told Emmy, “I don’t think you need to compare yourself to what grandma was. You’re totally different. You shouldn’t give yourself all that pressure.” After this, the judges unanimously voted yes. This moved Emmy to tears.
Katy Perry praised Emmy’s songwriting skills. She said, “Emmy, you’re an A+ songwriter.” Perry was in her last season on American Idol. She reassured Emmy of her unique talent. She urged her not to pressure herself by comparing to her grandmother.
