Elk playing soccer might sound unusual, but a viral video from Evergreen, Colorado, showcases exactly that.

God’s creation is full of wonders, and each creature He made is distinct with its own unique characteristics.

Elks are magnificent animals, known for their grace and power. They are generally shy and tend to avoid human interaction.

However, elks can be curious and, when feeling safe, might engage in playful behavior.

While they are not typically dangerous, it’s important to respect their space and observe from a distance.

In the video captured by Shira Moffatt, we see two young boys playing soccer near their driveway when an unexpected participant joins them.

The elk, initially standing on a ridge above the driveway, curiously engages with the boys by kicking at a red soccer ball. This playful interaction begins when the elk nudges the ball, which then rolls down to one of the boys.

The boy throws the ball back up the ridge, and the elk immediately runs over to the ball, sniffing and attempting to stomp on it.

This playful interaction continues as the ball repeatedly rolls down the hill, starting the sequence again.

A spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife observed that the kids were maintaining a safe distance from the elk and were not harassing it. They also mentioned that the elk’s actions were instinctual, treating the ball as if it were small prey.

This story is a beautiful reminder of how God’s creations can surprise and delight us. The elk, usually a symbol of majesty and wild beauty, showed a playful and curious side.

This encounter highlights the importance of respecting wildlife and the joy that comes from observing animals in their natural behavior.

Genesis 1:26, “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’

This dominion is not a call to domination but to stewardship and care. The playful interaction between the boys and the elk is a gentle reminder of our responsibility to protect and cherish God’s creation.

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.””
