A loyal dog saved his owner by running nearly four miles to get help after a car accident in Baker County, Oregon.
This story shows us how God uses His creation to help and comfort us. Sometimes, our pets become the unexpected heroes we need.
On June 2, 2024, Brandon Garrett was driving on U.S. Forest Service Road 39 with his four dogs. He lost control of the vehicle, which plunged into a steep, brushy ravine.
Garrett crawled about one hundred yards from the vehicle and spent the night there, injured and stranded.
One of Garrett’s dogs ran nearly four miles back to their camp, alerting the rest of the party that something was wrong.
Early the next morning, Garrett’s brother reported him missing to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office.
The rescue involved several teams: the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Search and Rescue, Pine Valley Rural Fire District, and Halfway Ambulance.
Sheriff Travis Ash, one of the first responders, found the vehicle and one of Garrett’s dogs in the ravine. As Sheriff Ash searched for a way to reach Garrett, he heard him calling for help.
Garrett was found alive about one hundred yards from the vehicle. Sheriff Ash provided first aid while others cleared a path with chainsaws.
The rescue team faced difficult terrain. They used a highline rope system to pull Garrett across the ravine to safety. He was then taken by ambulance to a Life Flight helicopter, which flew him to a regional hospital.
The remaining three dogs were found alive at the crash scene. The Baker County Sheriff’s Office thanked all the agencies involved in the rescue.
Many people praised Garrett’s dogs on social media, calling them “heroes” for their loyalty and bravery. One person wrote, “All four dogs are heroes, especially the one who ran 4 miles back to camp and alerted the family.”
This story reminds us of God’s protection and faithfulness. When it seems there is no hope, God sends help through unexpected sources. It highlights the loyalty and care God places in His creation.
Let’s be thankful for the loyal companions in our lives and recognize how God works through them. May we always be open to making a difference in others’ lives, just as Garrett’s dog did for him.
