Doctor Died for 85 Minutes Miraculously Comes Back to Life After Wife’s Simple Prayer

Doctor Sean George, a physician from Western Australia, was clinically dead for 85 minutes until his wife prayed and his heart miraculously started beating again.

A Drive That Changed Everything

On October 24, 2008, Dr. Sean George was driving back to Kalgoorlie after running a medical clinic in Esperance, Western Australia. He had just returned from Vanuatu where he had been helping local villagers.

During the 400-kilometer journey with his medical intern, he felt discomfort in his chest.

“I began to experience discomfort in my chest. It was not a pain, but it was just a slight discomfort,” Dr. George said. “And I thought, ‘Oh, it must be something that I ate.'”

After driving about 350 kilometers, Dr. George felt worse. He pulled over and asked his intern to check his pulse. Even though his pulse seemed normal, he worried it was more than indigestion.

He called his wife Sherry, also a doctor, about his condition. “I’m having a bit of discomfort in my chest. I’m not feeling that great. We are about 80 kilometers from Kalgoorlie, and I’m just about to turn into Kambalda,” he told her.

Sherry suggested he drive to the hospital in Kalgoorlie, but as Dr. George passed through Kambalda, a small mining town, he felt strongly that he should stop at the local clinic.

“I really felt a deep conviction in my heart that I need to actually get into the clinic at Kambalda,” he recalled.

“I’m Having a Heart Attack”

The town doctor was out for lunch when he arrived, so the nursing staff did an ECG and gave the results to Dr. George himself.

“I was looking at my own ECG. I said, ‘Oh my God, I’m having a heart attack,'” Dr. George remembered, seeing clear signs of a heart attack on the readout.

When the town doctor returned from lunch, he doubted Dr. George was having a heart attack at only 39 years old. They moved to the emergency room for another ECG.

His pain got worse even after receiving morphine and his vital signs began to worsen.

“As I was laying down on the bed, I noticed that my pain was getting worse. I looked at the heart monitor, and I noticed that my pulse rate was going up, my blood pressure was actually going up,” he said.

“And I was thinking to myself, that’s not good. And that was the last thing that I actually remember seeing.”

85 Minutes Without a Heartbeat

Just 11 minutes after the first ECG, Dr. George’s heart stopped completely. For the next 70 minutes, medical staff worked to save his life. They gave him 13 electrical shocks and over 4,000 chest compressions.

After more than an hour of trying, the medical team agreed to stop all life support except oxygen.

Medical science tells us that after just three minutes without blood to the brain, brain cells start to die. After 20 minutes, the brain is completely dead. This is why CPR rarely continues beyond 30 minutes.

A Wife’s Desperate Prayer

When Sherry arrived at the clinic with two of Dr. George’s colleagues, the senior doctor told her that her husband was gone and suggested she say goodbye.

Instead of giving up hope, Sherry took his hand and prayed a simple prayer.

“Lord Jesus, Sean is only 39, I am only 38, we have a 10-year-old boy, I need a miracle,” she prayed.

Almost immediately after Sherry’s prayer, Dr. George’s heart began beating again, even though he had been clinically dead for 1 hour and 25 minutes.

“When I heard all that noise and all that commotion, then I looked up at the monitor, and then I realized that Sean’s heartbeat had come back.”

“And when I heard the monitor with the beep, I just thought, ‘Oh, that’s something very special.'”

Though still unconscious with a weak pulse, Dr. George was taken to Kalgoorlie Hospital and then to Royal Perth Hospital. Doctors cleared his blocked right coronary artery with a stent.

The medical team doubted he would survive or recover brain function, especially since his heart attack had also damaged his liver and kidneys.

Over the next few days, Dr. George began to recover. Two days after the heart attack, he briefly opened his eyes. By Monday, he was moving his hands and feet, and by Wednesday, he was fully conscious.

He could talk, see, move, and even read his own medical charts.

The Miracle That Stunned Medical Staff

On the 13th day, Dr. George was discharged from the hospital. When people came to visit him and asked, “Where’s Dr. George?”, the medical staff testified, “Miracle man has left the hospital.” Even the medical staff called it a miracle.

Within three months, Dr. George had returned to full-time work at Kalgoorlie Hospital.

Looking back on his amazing experience, Dr. George believes God saved him from certain death to teach important truths. “Jesus Christ really is the Creator God, the giver of life, the accomplisher of impossible things, and He responds to the humble prayers of His servants,” he said.

“Eternity is only a breath away for us all, and what really matters is our relationship with God. We are only pilgrims on this earth, life is temporary, what matters is eternal.”

Today, Dr. George and his wife start each day together in prayer. “I think the most special thing for us is the morning quiet time that we have together, where we read the Bible and spend time praying together before we start the day, and that’s wonderful,” Sherry shares.

Dr. George’s story shows us that God still works miracles today. His power has no limits, even when medical science can do no more. Let this testimony strengthen your faith and remind you to cherish each day.

God hears our prayers, and nothing is impossible for Him.

Verse of the Day

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”

Isaiah 53:5-6
