When Bobo, a massive farm pig, broke free from his pen in New Hope, Mississippi, he led Columbus Police officers on an eight-day chase that turned into a memorable story for the entire community.
The Call That Started It All
The excitement peaked on Tuesday, October 15, when someone spotted Bobo near a local daycare. The Columbus Police Chief knew this wasn’t a regular call, so he reached out to Officer Melvin Shirley for his unique background.
“The chief called me and said, ‘Shirley, I need your country boy expertise in dealing with a hog,'” Officer Shirley shared with a grin. The situation called for special skills, and the department knew exactly who to turn to.
Eight Officers vs. One Clever Pig
When Officer Mack Smith arrived on the scene, he couldn’t believe his eyes. “As soon as I laid eyes on the hog, it was about 700, 800 pounds and my first thought was, ‘Well hey, it’s my time to shine right here,'” he said.
What followed was a scene straight out of a comedy show – eight officers from the Columbus Police Department and Animal Control Division tried their best to catch one clever pig who had other plans.
The chase turned into quite a show for everyone watching. People gathered around, laughing as they watched the officers slip and slide while trying to catch Bobo.
Despite his size, the pig moved with surprising speed and skill, dodging the officers at every turn. The police had a solid plan, but Bobo proved smarter than they expected, showing why pigs are known as intelligent animals.
Victory at Last
The officers didn’t give up easily, though their bodies felt every minute of the chase. Officer Smith admitted later, “He put up a good fight, you know. My back is hurting a little bit but it’s alright. We got him subdued…had a lot of fun out of it.”
Their hard work paid off when they finally managed to catch Bobo and return him to his owner, though the victory came with mixed feelings when they learned he would soon head to a meat processor.
While Bobo’s adventure might seem small in the grand scheme of things, it brought our community together and gave us all a reason to smile.
