Life often brings unexpected trials that test our faith and strength. The recent Palisades Fire in Los Angeles County has brought pain to many families, yet God continues to work through people to bring comfort and joy even when all seems lost.

Casey Colvin was at work when evacuation orders came for Pacific Palisades. He spent five hours stuck in traffic, trying to get home to save his rescue dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika.

When he couldn’t reach his house, a kind firefighter offered to help search for his pets. The firefighter managed to save Tika Tika Tika, but Oreo ran away into the neighborhood.

“I literally rescued them off the streets, they deserve better than this,” Colvin told NBC Los Angeles reporter Liz Kreutz through tears while sitting in traffic. “How do I get to my house?”

Soon after, Colvin learned his home had burned down. Instead of giving up, he kept searching for Oreo. He posted flyers online and used an AirTag on his pet to try to find him.

Neighbors reported seeing Oreo twice, and someone spotted him sleeping in the rubble of a nearby home.

With help from a professional dog tracker, Colvin went back to search his destroyed neighborhood. They found Oreo hiding in the dirt and debris.

NBC filmed the beautiful moment when Colvin, holding a squeaky toy and Tika Tika Tika, called out to Oreo who was sitting at the top of his neighbor’s driveway.

When Oreo came running to him, Colvin broke down in tears of joy. “Oh, honey!…you’re alive! You’re alive!” he cried while holding Oreo high in his arms.

Filled with gratitude, he ran in circles shouting, “Yes! Oh, thank you, Jesus! Thank you, God!”

This story of faith and reunion comes amid the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires that continue to burn through Los Angeles County.

The fires have taken 24 lives, forced nearly 200,000 people from their homes, and destroyed about 10,000 buildings across 61 square miles of land.

Right now, many families are suffering from these fires. Let’s join together in prayer for those who have lost loved ones and homes. Ask God to protect the firefighters and give strength to everyone working to help others.

Remember, even in our hardest moments, God is always working to bring light into the darkness.
