A bus driver’s quick actions saved a young child who was running alone on a busy street.
In June, Peter Warner was driving his bus in Staten Island, New York. He saw something that made him stop right away. A small boy, wearing only a diaper and tank top, was running down the middle of the street. The child had no shoes and was holding an iPad.
Warner, who has two kids of his own, knew this was dangerous. He didn’t waste any time. He stopped his bus to block the intersection at Harold Street and Sunset Avenue. This smart move protected the child and kept others safe too.
“I saw a little boy running in the middle of the street,” Warner said. “He had an iPad, a diaper, and a tank top on. No shoes. I stopped the bus right away. I blocked the intersection, got out, made sure my bus was secure, and took the baby into my care.”
Warner tried to talk to the child, but the boy couldn’t speak. This made Warner even more worried. He called his bus company, his union, and 911 for help.
The bus cameras recorded everything that happened. A passenger also took a video of a sweet moment after the police arrived. Even with the police there, the little boy wanted another hug from Warner. This shows how kind and comforting Warner was to the scared child.
Later, they found out the boy had walked about four blocks from his home. His dad was asleep and his mom was at work when he got out. This reminds us how fast a child can end up in danger, even when things seem normal at home.
Warner thought about what he saw. “If the kid was on the sidewalk, I’d think his parents were chasing him,” he said. “But he was right in the middle of the street.” This shows why Warner knew he had to act fast.
The story has a happy ending. The boy was safely returned to his family. His mom was so thankful to Warner. “She gave me a big hug and kept thanking me,” Warner shared. This chance meeting even led to a new friendship.
“We’re now friends on Facebook,” Warner said. “She comments on pictures of my kids. We made a friendship out of this.” This shows how God can create good things, even from scary situations.
Warner went beyond his job as a bus driver that day. In 13 years of driving, he’d never seen anything like this. His quick and caring actions show why it’s important to be ready to help others, even if it means changing our plans.
As followers of Jesus, we’re asked to be His hands and feet in our communities. Warner’s actions remind us of the Good Samaritan story. Jesus taught us to show kindness to anyone in need, no matter who they are or how inconvenient it might be.
May this story encourage us all to be more watchful, caring, and willing to step up when others need help. Let’s pray for God to keep our communities safe, especially the children. And let’s ask Him to raise up more people who are ready to be His hands and feet when others are in need.
