When the fire broke out in their home in Virginia on April 10, the two brothers, William, 6, and Zachariah, 3, became trapped. Despite the chance to escape, William chose to protect his younger brother, covering him with his own body. Their father, James Brice, described William’s selflessness: “He’s smart enough to have gotten out of the house… and I think he saw his brother in danger… and he went in and protected him.”

The bravery and love William showed were clear when first responders found him shielding his younger brother, Zachariah, from the flames. Even in their final moments, these brothers exemplified the sacrificial love that reflects the compassion of Jesus.

“We’re grieving, but at the same time, it’s like my 6-year-old made the manliest of choices, and it’s like proud dad at the same time.” James said.

After the fire, first responders worked tirelessly, performing CPR on the boys for 45 minutes in the front yard. This gave the family a few more precious days with them before their bodies succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation.

James expressed gratitude for this time, saying, “That was the miracle… that we didn’t lose them on Wednesday and we had those extra days to get as much time.”

First responders and medical staff honored the brothers with deep respect, as did the firefighters who made them honorary members of their ranks.

The family organized a memorial service, calling it a “party” to honor William and Zachariah, celebrating the joy they brought into the world.

Though devastated by their loss, James and Reina Brice found solace in the love of the community and the knowledge that their boys’ legacy continues through organ donation, saving up to nine lives worldwide. “We’re Christians, and we have faith,” James said. “If we could be an answered prayer or a miracle to another family, that gave us some comfort.”

Even in their grief, the Brice family finds strength in their faith in God. They believe that their boys are in heaven, and that they will one day be reunited as a family. They have found a renewed purpose in sharing their story to help others find light through darkness. As Reina expressed, “Because we believe that they’re in heaven and that we’re gonna see them again, it’s possible to share that hope.”
