Samuel Henderson, an eleven-year-old from Choctaw, Oklahoma who has autism and Tourette syndrome, has captured hearts across America with his remarkable ability to perfectly imitate about 50 different bird calls.

A Hidden Talent
For years, Samuel practiced his bird calls alone along the back fence of his school playground. His mother, Lori Henderson, was aware of his exceptional skill but worried about how others might react to her son’s unusual talent.
“Some people say that I swallowed birds,” Samuel told CBS News.
Samuel can imitate many birds, including blue jays, tufted titmice, and robins. He says the barn swallow is the hardest to copy, but he still manages to do it well.
The Talent Show Breakthrough
Everything changed at the 2024 annual talent show at Nicoma Park Intermediate School. Samuel wanted to take part, but this made his mother nervous.
No student from special education had ever joined the school talent show before. Most performances featured singing, dancing, or playing instruments.
“Because some kids can be mean,” Lori explained to CBS News. “It would just break my heart if that were to have happened.”
Samuel’s teacher helped convince Lori to let her son try. The teacher believed Samuel’s gift deserved to be shared with others.
With his mother’s support, Samuel bravely took the stage.
At first, his classmates didn’t know what to think.
“It really sounded like there was a bird in the building,” one student said.
From Confusion to Cheers
As Samuel continued his performance, something wonderful happened. The confusion turned into amazement. His classmates went from looking puzzled to dropping their jaws in surprise. By sharing his talent, Samuel earned not just acceptance but real admiration.
“He’s brave, he’s really brave. It takes a lot of courage to get yourself up there,” another student said.
For Lori, watching from the audience was an emotional experience. “The kids were roaring,” she said. “I was so happy to see him living his dreams. My heart just exploded.”
New Friendships Form
Almost a year after the talent show, Samuel’s life at school has changed completely. The boy who once practiced alone now has plenty of company. Samuel spends recess surrounded by classmates who want to learn his bird calls.
What used to be a solo activity has become something that connects Samuel with his peers. His unique ability has helped him make friends in ways that might never have happened without the talent show.
After CBS featured Samuel’s story on their “On The Road” segment with Steve Hartman, his talent went viral. Now thousands of people across the country have become fans of his amazing bird-calling abilities.
A Mother’s Faith Rewarded
Lori Henderson’s journey went from worry to joy. Like many parents of children with special needs, she feared her son might face teasing or rejection. Her concern came from love and wanting to protect Samuel.
The encouragement from Samuel’s teacher helped Lori take a chance and let her son perform. This shows how important supportive teachers are for children with special needs and their families.
