Whether it is volunteering with the local charity or donating to the needy, speaking to someone who is feeling lonely, or lending emotional support to a friend having a tough time.

If you want to serve God here on earth then you have to demonstrate it by helping and caring for others. Bringing the Lord’s love into your community is powerful but not easy.

Follow Jesus’s example of serving

In John 13:15, Jesus sets an example for all of us when he washes the feet of the disciples which showed His love, humility, and service. “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you,” Jesus says.

Jesus lowered Himself down to the lowest among men by serving others, washing their feet, and feeding thousands of people. He’s the Son of God, King most High King, Lord of Lords, but He used to walk miles and miles to heal the sick and dead. Jesus was so humble that He would stop on the way and touch and heal the sick ones who nobody bothered about.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 2:3-5

Being a servant means being genuinely concerned about people, to look out for their spiritual and physical well-being at all times. Jesus was never stressed by timelines and what people would think of Him, He was led by the Spirit of God and followed His prompting to help and serve others.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. – Galatians 5:13.

If you find yourself unable or unwilling to serve others then this is what you need to do:

1. Ask Jesus to change your heart

Ask God to change your heart and give you a desire to help and serve others in need, because only He can change your heart, soften it and make you learn how to love those around you and look at them with compassion.

2. Keep free time to help others

If your plate is full of things to do then ask God to free up some of your time and prioritize what’s to be done and what can be set aside.

3. Keep others’ needs before your own needs

Jesus would always look at compassion on the poor and needy and likewise you also need to be kind and compassionate towards others who God has placed in front of you.

4. Do what God says to do

Listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit and do what He says to do. You don’t have to necessarily help each and everyone around you but ask God, listen to Him and do what He says.
