Christian musician Ben Fuller shares his powerful testimony at San Quentin Prison about how God delivered him from 14 years of drug addiction and made him a worship leader.
Many people chase after money, success, relationships, or substances thinking these will give them happiness, but later they understand these worldly things only lead to emptiness and pain.
Only God can fill the void in our hearts and set us free from the chains of sin. His love offers true peace and lasting joy that no earthly pleasure can match.
Ben Fuller’s journey from addiction to freedom shows us that when we surrender everything to God, He can transform our deepest struggles into powerful testimonies of His grace.
Ben Fuller’s story began on a dairy farm in Vermont, a state where only 2% of people follow Christianity. As a young boy, he longed to hear his father say “I love you” or show pride in his accomplishments. This missing piece in his life created deep pain.
One day, at age 16, Fuller walked into the woods with a gun and nearly ended his life. Though he survived that dark moment, it marked the beginning of a 14 year battle with drug addiction.
Fuller kept his struggles hidden while fighting cocaine and alcohol dependence. Even after losing his best friend to fentanyl in December 2017, he continued down this destructive path.
His dream of becoming a country music star led him to Nashville in 2018. There, he worked on Broadway, consuming twenty beers each night and often driving while drunk.
God used a family from Vermont, who had moved to Nashville the year before, to change Fuller’s life. They invited him for dinner and then to church.
At Church of the City, surrounded by 2,000 people worshiping God, Fuller experienced something that would transform his life forever.
“As a man that lived as a secret drug addict for 14 and a half years, I stood in that aisleway, and I felt the spirit of God,” Fuller told the inmates at San Quentin. “Romans 10:9 says, ‘If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.’ I gave my full heart over to the Lord and said, ‘Fix it! You do it because I can’t!'”
After surrendering his life to God, Fuller watched as his old habits fell away. His need for alcohol decreased until he no longer wanted to drink. Bad language and harmful relationships stopped as he discovered God’s purpose for his life.
Now, approaching five years of complete sobriety, Fuller travels to prisons sharing his story through songs like ‘Black Sheep’, ‘If I Got Jesus’, and ‘Who I Am’.
At San Quentin, Fuller performed in the prison yard, connecting with inmates through music and honest conversation. His words touched hearts as he declared, “I praise God for all the trials that I had to go through to get here just to stand up here in front of y’all because you guys bring me hope. You guys are showing me that God is behind bars.”
Through his music, Fuller shares messages about finding identity in Christ and God’s constant pursuit of those who feel lost. His song ‘Black Sheep’ speaks to people who feel they don’t belong, while ‘Who I Am’ tells the story of his journey from addiction to freedom, emphasizing that God found him when he was lost.
No matter what chains bind you today – addiction, pain, loneliness, or past mistakes – God stands ready to set you free.
Like Ben Fuller discovered, true freedom comes when we fully surrender our lives to Jesus Christ. Don’t let shame or fear hold you back.
The same God who changed a drug addict into a worship leader is waiting to give you a fresh start and a new song of joy.
