Because He Lives hymn story
‘Because He Lives’ was written and composed by Bill and Gloria Gaither in the late 1960s. At the time, they were expecting their third child and facing tough situations, with Bill recovering from mononucleosis. Gloria was struggling with anxiety and mental anguish, and the very thought of having another child was taking its toll on her.
God sent His Son
They called Him Jesus
He came to love, heal and forgive
He lived and died to buy my pardon
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives
On New Year’s Eve, while sitting at the fireplace in agony and fear, Gloria was overwhelmed by the rising drug abuse, racial tensions, and the “God is dead” idea being perpetrated in the education system. Suddenly, she was filled with a gentle, calming peace, as if the heavenly Father had come to her rescue. The panic subsided, replaced by a calmness and assurance that only God can impart. She was assured that everything would be fine if left in God’s hands.
Because He lives I can face tomorrow
Because He lives all fear is gone
Because I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives
Soon after the baby was born, Bill and Gloria recalled how the Holy Spirit had come to their aid and how Christ’s resurrection had revitalized their thinking. Joy once again filled their lives, dominating the fearful circumstances they had previously felt.
And then one day
I’ll cross that river
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain
And then as death gives way to vict’ry
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know he lives
These events helped give birth to one of the greatest Christian songs of our time, “Because He Lives,” inspired by John 14:19: “… because I live, ye shall live also.”
This is exactly the message we need during these times of crisis due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. The music video, with the talented Joey Stamper singing, is so comforting and suits the song perfectly, reminding us that Christ lives.
