A little boy was found miraculously alive after being lost in the woods in extreme weather conditions, and he has thanked an unlikely friend for it—a bear.
Three-year-old Casey Hathaway was playing in his great-grandmother’s backyard in Ernul, North Carolina, with his two siblings when they were called to come inside, but he was nowhere to be seen. His family searched for him for 45 minutes in the area before deciding to call 911.
Over the next 48 hours, the FBI, law enforcement, dozens of volunteers, rescue workers, and drones searched over 1,000 acres of terrain to find Casey. However, extreme weather, wind, and rain caused them to pause the search until conditions improved.
The next day, the Craven County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a local who heard a little boy crying for his mother. This led rescuers 50 yards into the woods, where they found Casey tangled in some thorny bushes on the other side of a river. He was drenched but otherwise fine. They gave the boy some water and reunited him with his family, but they were surprised by what the boy told them next. Casey said he was kept safe by a friendly bear.
His aunt Breanna Hathaway posted on her Facebook, “Casey is healthy, smiling and talking. He said he hung out with a bear for two days,” She added, “God sent him a friend to keep him safe. God is a good God. Miracles do happen.”
Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said that for a little boy to survive such a horrible ordeal was nothing less than astonishing. He was treated for minor cuts and bruises at the Carolina East Medical Center and is now healthy and in good spirits.
What Casey experienced was nothing short of a miracle, and this really proves that there is a God above who is taking care of each of us and has His eyes on us all the time.
