A Delta Air Lines flight attendant delivered a moving performance of ‘Amazing Grace’ at President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral in Washington National Cathedral, fulfilling a promise made years ago.
The story behind this special performance started in 2017 when Phyllis Adams and pianist Lelia Bolden performed at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
After hearing them sing ‘The Lord’s Prayer,’ President Carter asked Adams if she would sing ‘Amazing Grace’ at his funeral.
The hymn, written in 1772 by John Newton, a former slave ship captain turned Anglican minister, was one of Carter’s favorites.
Adams and Bolden, who have performed together for over 20 years in their group “Song Rise to Thee,” received the official call in 2020 during Carter’s funeral preparations.
They began practicing immediately with the United States Marine Band, and Adams committed to weekly voice coaching sessions through Zoom.
President Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. At his funeral service, Adams’ powerful coloratura soprano voice filled the majestic Washington National Cathedral.
Adams’ rendition of ‘Amazing Grace,’ accompanied by Bolden’s masterful piano playing and the prestigious United States Marine Band, moved many to tears.
